Guide · Envelope budgeting

Envelope budgeting: the method, and which app to choose in 2026.

Give every unit of your money a role: decide up front what your money should do, and always know exactly how much is left, and where. We explain the method, then compare the apps fairly.

The method

Envelope budgeting, explained simply

An idea as old as money itself, brought back into fashion by cash stuffing.

The idea is simple: instead of reviewing your spending at the end of the month, you split every unit of your income up front into "envelopes" (rent, groceries, going out, holidays, savings).

You then spend from each envelope, and you see the remaining balance for every category in real time. When the envelope is empty, you stop.

Originally these were real envelopes stuffed with cash. Today an app does the same job, more simply and more accurately.

The goal isn't to deprive yourself, but to know exactly where your money goes, with no stress and no nasty surprise at the end of the month.

And it's useful even when you already save. In late 2025, French households were putting aside 17.9% of their disposable income, a near-record level (INSEE).

But saving a lot doesn't tell you where the rest goes. That's exactly what the envelope method makes visible, category by category.

The promise

Decide in advance, don't just review after the fact

The difference between a simple spending tracker and a real decision-making tool.

Most budgeting apps are rear-view mirrors: they show you where the money went, once it's already gone.

That's useful, but always a month behind. And it changes nothing about the decision you've already made: you observe, you don't steer.

The envelope method flips the logic: you decide in advance what each unit of money should do, before you even spend it.

In practice, every expense then lands in its envelope, your balances stay accurate, and you see at a glance what's left, everywhere.

The familiar "where did my money go?" disappears, because you know it continuously, category by category. You no longer endure your budget: you direct it.

It's a small shift in mindset. But it's the one that keeps a budget going over time, where simple tracking always ends up abandoned.

Getting started

No need to set everything up on day one

You start from reality, never from a blank page.

The classic fear: "you have to build your whole budget in one go." Wrong.

With a good app, you add an account, you log your expenses as you go, and that's it.

After about a month, the app knows your habits: your monthly summary and statistics show where your money really goes.

iBudgetAll goes further by suggesting the envelopes to create for you, already calibrated on your real spending from the past month. You confirm, you adjust; you never start from nothing.

Features and prices recorded on 29 August 2026 from official websites and the App Store / Google Play listings. Prices vary by country and change over time; free tiers are often capped (number of envelopes). Sources: Plan & Multiply, Finzee, Goodbudget, YNAB, Bankin'.

In short: the dedicated envelope apps (Plan & Multiply, Zenka, Finzee) are excellent "envelopes without a bank" options. But their free version is quickly capped, and multi-currency is uneven.

YNAB offers the deepest "zero-based" approach: English only, expensive, and no multi-currency.

iBudgetAll brings together what the others keep apart: the zero-based depth of YNAB, in your own language, with real envelopes (physical and virtual), the choice between per-account or global management, multi-currency, and a YNAB import to migrate effortlessly.

What makes iBudgetAll different

Two ways to manage your envelopes, your choice

Chosen at setup, changeable at any time. Few apps offer both.

Recommended, simple

"Per-account" mode

Your virtual envelopes are tied to your accounts. You always know how much is left and which account the money is in. Ideal if you pay mostly by card and transfer.

Advanced

"Global" mode

Your envelopes are independent of accounts: a single amount "to allocate", like a YNAB-style zero-based budget. Ideal if you think in categories rather than accounts.

And for cash, physical envelopes (cash stuffing) work alongside in both modes: real digital piggy banks you fill and empty by hand.

Card, cash, or both: mix them freely.

Taking control

A role for every unit of money

When you're ready, you move from tracking to taking control.

In "My Budget", you allocate your money across your envelopes until there's nothing left to assign. Every unit of money has a mission.

Then you spend as usual: every expense lands in its envelope, your balances stay accurate, and you see at a glance what's left everywhere.

This is the heart of zero-based budgeting: the discipline of YNAB, without the language barrier or the price.

Going further

If you already manage your budget like a pro

iBudgetAll isn't just a spending tracker. Under the hood:

Zero-based budgeting

Every unit of money assigned, a "left to assign" figure always up to date.

End-of-period projection

Upcoming income and expenses included: you see where you'll land.

Monthly summary and statistics

Clear charts, fixed vs variable expenses, comparisons over time.

Multi-currency

A native currency per account, converted at the totals. Handy when travelling or living abroad.

Savings challenges and goals

Save in a playful way, with visual progress.

YNAB and CSV import

Coming from elsewhere? Bring your history across without starting over.

Privacy

No ads, no tracking, never sold on

A budget stays personal. Our stance, said plainly.

iBudgetAll shows no ads and does no advertising tracking: the ad components have been removed from the app. Your data is never sold on.

You choose: connect your bank for automatic tracking, or stick with manual entry so you share no banking data.

Your data is hosted securely (Firebase/Google, encrypted in transit and at rest on our servers), protected by a local PIN lock.

You stay in control: free export and account deletion at any time, in line with GDPR. Publisher: SAS ARJB Studio, France.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask

Is there a budgeting app without a bank connection?
No, it is not required: envelope budgeting relies on an allocation you decide yourself, and manual entry is all you need. But with iBudgetAll, it is your choice: you can connect your bank for automatic tracking (optional connection, PSD2, more than 2,500 banks in Europe, and in Asia: Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam), or stay 100% manual.
Which envelope budgeting app is available in English?
Yes. Several apps work with manual entry, without connecting any bank at all: iBudgetAll, Goodbudget, or a simple spreadsheet. It is the most privacy-friendly option, since no banking data is shared. iBudgetAll supports this, while still keeping the bank connection optional for anyone who wants it.
Do you need to connect your bank?
Natively in English: iBudgetAll (physical and virtual envelopes, zero-based budgeting, with or without a bank connection), along with Goodbudget and YNAB. The French-language references Plan & Multiply, Zenka, and Finzee have no English version.
Is iBudgetAll free?
A free 32-day trial with no credit card. After that, in the UK: £6.99/month or £59.99/year (about £5.00/month). Prices vary by country. A launch offer of -15% on the first year is available until 31 October 2026.
Physical or virtual envelopes?
Both, and you can mix them. Physical envelopes are cash (cash stuffing); virtual ones are digital pockets tracked automatically in the app.
iBudgetAll or YNAB?
The same zero-based budgeting depth, but iBudgetAll works in your own language across 36 languages, offers multi-currency and real envelopes, and costs less. A native YNAB import lets you migrate without starting over. YNAB remains an excellent reference, English only.
Can you tie envelopes to accounts, or keep them independent?
Your choice. Per-account mode ties each envelope to an account (you always know where the money is); Global mode makes them independent of accounts (YNAB style). You choose during setup and can switch at any time.
Is my data sold on?
Never. No ads, no advertising tracking, no resale. Data hosted securely, exportable and deletable at any time (GDPR).
